Dating
Violence Once Again Leads To A Co-Ed's Death
Sunday, February 8, a
Millersville University co-ed was beaten to death by her boyfriend.
Karlie Hall was with her boyfriend, Gregorio Orrostieta when he
killed her, perhaps accidentally, during an argument, after
attending a party. She showed signs of having been severely beaten
and strangled. While we do not know all of the details of what
happened that night, we do know that injuries and death
resulting from dating violence is not as uncommon as we would like
to believe.
If you are in an
abusive relationship, please seek professional help. Or, at least
let your parent/guardian know what has happened. You deserve better!

Attention, Guys!
I want to address the
guys, right now. Even though some of this piece involves you, gals.
It involves sexual assaults.
First and
foremost, there is no excuse for coerced or other forced sexual
activity. Period.
*
Much is made at the high school and college level of the number of
females who are sexually assaulted. However, not that much is made
of the males who are also victims of sexual assault.
* There are gay males
who are raped or otherwise assaulted by other men, both gay and
heterosexual. Even, bisexual. -- Victims often fear embarassment or
further assaults as a result of reporting these incidents. Reporting
these attacks to their parents can be devastating, especially if the
parents are unaware of their child's sexual orientation.
* There are males who
are falsely accused of rape or assault by others who seek revenge
for being jilted, cheated on, or otherwise rejected. The guys often
feel helpless trying to prove their innocence in a 'she-said,
he-said' situation.
* Then, there are
heterosexual males who are coerced into sexual activity by and with
a female. (Taking advantage of a person who is drunk or high, is
wrong, whether that person is a guy or a gal.)
Schools need to do a
better job of not only educating students of the dangers of sexual
assaults, but parents, and clergy need to also do more. If you
are a victim of rape, rape accusations, or other sexual
assault-related matters, think of an adult whom you can trust. (Even
police can be a good resource.) Once you make your decision, seek
the help that you need. Do not feel ashamed. Do not suffer in
silence. Many communities have rape/sexual assault crisis centers
that help both genders of victims. There are also telephone
hotlines.
Help Save A Friend, Even Yourself
Unless you have been
living under a rock, you have heard the latest example of a teen who
went on a shooting/killing rampage. The teen in Washington who
invited a number of close friends and a relative to join him at
lunch in the cafetaria. That's where he shot them. Some dead, others
still in bad shape in the hospital. - The shooter then killed
himself.
What makes this
incident somewhat different than others is that he did not appear
to have been bullied. In fact, he was recently made a homecoming
prince. Played football.
What makes this
situation similar to others, however, is that he seems to have been
spurned by a girl he wished to date. He also began posting
'out-of-character' on social media.
If you have had a
breakup or been rejected by a girl or guy, it might feel humiliating
and 'the end of the world', but it truly isn't. This is an occasion
where adults can share some real insight: The pain will pass and
new and better opportunities await you, if you hang in there!
Don't be embarrassed or afraid to speak with a counselor at school
or clergy or another, trusted adult. There are also 24/7 hotlines
available.
The other take-away for you is that if you begin seeing someone
change the tone of their postings on social media to something
dark/violent, please let an adult know. You might be the one who
saves your friends or even yourself.
'Nuff said.
Teen
Grand Master?
Forget stereotypes.
The Chess Club Geek is cool. They are the 'other
jock', but, hopefully, without the attitude often attributed to star
athletes. (And, which is not always an accurate portrayal of
them).
(Personal
'confession': I was in my school's chess club but was pretty
awful at it. But, one of my fondest memories was when my sons
brought me to a match where a Grand Master was playing many folks. I
was beaten fairly quickly, but what a great family night! - So,
make some great memories with your family! Why don't you all
learn to play chess and spend some quality time together. It might
not be as boring as you imagine!)

'Deleted' Snapchat Photos Downloaded By
Thousands Of Others!
Many of these photos
were of teens in sexually-oriented poses, to say the least. - We
remind you, again, that Snapchat photos can easily stay around and
be viewed by others. So, please stop this reckless behavior that can
have serious consequences for you and loved ones.

Succumbing To Peer Pressure
By Minu Aravind
A well said quote
which goes as, “Friends and books should be few and good”, it surely
does matter a lot when one has to choose the group where they prefer
to be seen with by the outsiders. When we are toddlers and we enter,
the hallowed portals of a school, as children we always seem to live
in the fear of every stranger that we come across when we enter the
premise and cry because every face is new and equally horrifying to
us, especially that of the teachers, who seem to appear as the
“Bogey Man” of the many horror stories narrated by our mom’s.
So amongst that huge
crowd when we find the mild looking person, who is of our age, tiny
and terrified, we tend to get along well with that kid and slowly
similar terrified looking kids join the group and by the end of a
week, we don’t even realise that we are all best buddies. But, there
is one stark difference between toddlerhood friendship and
friendship in youth days. Youngsters mostly tend to be the one who
like to go along with the crowd, i.e. the ones who are popular and
loved by the teachers, considered to be cool etc. It is not bad to
be with them, but what we should keep in mind is whether the group
of friends we choose are the real friends or just “friends for
benefit”. Real friends who can vouch for you whenever you need their
help are rare to find, but if one does then the person surely has
hit the jackpot.
Peer pressure has
often led to serious offensive acts that have taken place in schools
and colleges and in certain events have led to the youngster’s
death. The usual cases reported on incidents that were a result of
peer pressure includes that of drug abuse, alcohol abuse, getting
caught in sex racket cases and recently the trends of the rave
parties, which is taking the reputation of the present generation
youngsters down the drains. To be responsible for one’s own actions
is a very responsible attitude that is present in very few people
today. Unleashing one’s own freedom rights is good, but good to the
extent where you are not violating others freedom. However, very few
people do wish to take advice and hence are the ones who mostly get
into bigger troubles in life. Before life gives you a bigger jolt,
wake up and be responsible citizens.
